Aaaaaaaaand it’s official!!! The Baby and mummy initiative is a Goooo!

We started working on it just 10days ago and we already have our first aid team set up and we’ve got 5 girls we’re working to support.

This is our very first public project and we choose to give it all we’ve got. Looking forward to amazing partnerships with @mariestopes_ghana @unfpa_ghana. Let’s make sure that all pregnancies are wanted and safe.
Interested in supporting in anyway? Dm us and let’s get some work done.

Alright, everyone! How about some real talk?!⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Pregnancy constipation is real, and it’s no fun! 💩⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
The main culprit is yet again a hormone your body produces during pregnancy…. *drumroll please* 🥁 you guessed it, PROGESTERONE!⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Increase in this hormone causes a lot of different pregnancy problems and includes the crazy fun times you’re having in the bathroom. 🚽⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Basically, progesterone causes all the smooth muscles in your body to relax, including your intestines. This means that stuff moves slower through your system and more water is absorbed along the way, making your stool harder. 🧻🧻🧻⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Other causes of constipation is pressure on your bowels from your growing uterus, lack of fluid in your diet and iron in prenatal vitamins.💊⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
It seems about 3 out of 4 women suffer from this issue during pregnancy. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
But what can you do to ease the suffering?⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
🧻Eat more fibre. ⁣⁣⁣
Get it from fresh fruits, vegetables, bean, peas, lentils, prunes etc.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
🧻Stay hydrated. ⁣⁣⁣
More fluid in your system makes your stool softer and easier to pass. Try to double your water intake if you can!⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
🧻Eat smaller meals. ⁣⁣⁣
This will allow the stomach to digest food without working overtime and it can transfer food to bowels more smoothly. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
🧻Exercise! ⁣⁣⁣
Regular physical activity really helps to reduce constipation. Get the OK from your provider and try to move your body at least 20-30 minutes a day 3-4 days a week! It doesn’t have to be complicated. Find an activity that you love and try to fit it into your routine. Walking and yoga are great for pregnant ladies.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Ask your health care provider about stool softeners if all else fails.👩‍⚕️⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Tag a pregnant friend who needs some relief!🤗👇👇👇⁣⁣⁣

‘YOU’RE PREGNANT. WHAT HAPPENS NOW?’ SERIES:

🤰12-13 Weeks

This is the time when you will undergo your first trimester ultrasound. This ultrasound is performed to look at the early anatomy of your baby and investigate to see whether there are any early indicators that your baby may have a chromosomal condition.

If there are any issues or concerns your obstetrician will discuss this further with you.

For most soon to be parent’s, this is the first time they get a glimpse of their baby. What an exciting time.
(Disclaimer: this post only provides general information as each pregnancy is different. If you have any concerns, you should always seek advice from your GP or Obstetrician)

More heavy spotting today – so I of course had a panic and called the clinic and the nurse told me not to worry but to come off my Clexane and aspirin for now. About 20 mins after our call the spotting stopped 🙌 so really I should have just taken a deep breath.
.
No matter how many times I‘m told spotting is normal, especially in IVF pregnancies, it is almost impossible to really hear it. I’ve been spotting on and off now since before my 1st beta showed the very happy news that I’m pregnant. It makes every bathroom trip a heart-in-mouth moment and requires a sanitary pad on at all times 🥳
.
All evidence points to everything being fine with the pregnancy, my hcg is now rising well (currently 2300) and with normal ranges and I’m feeling more reassuring pregnancy symptoms. I’m so so grateful and excited to be on this new journey and I want to enjoy it. I hope I’ll feel relief when I see little bub for the first time at my heartbeat scan but for now I am going to have to try chill the eff out and take each day as it comes.

9 weeks pregnant today so officially into the third month and inching ever closer to the second trimester 🍇 I am bracing myself for the sickness ramping up over the next few weeks as many HG sufferers find the sickness peaks between weeks 9 and 13, but hopefully it won’t be too bad. Both sets of parents now know our news and are excited. In a few weeks we will tell wider family about our little grape too 🍇💜#EarlyPregnancy #FirstTrimester #9WeeksPregnant #HyperemesisGravidarum #HGAwareness

“4 Weeks Pregnant : Baby is the Size of a Poppy Seed ”

Weeks 4-10 are arguably the most important in your pregnancy🤰as this is the time your baby👶 develops most of their organs

Must Do’s
1) Immediately discontinue alcohol use🥂, smoking🚬, & other illicit substances💉. Limit caffeine ☕use
2) If you haven’t already, start a prenatal vitamin that includes 30mg of iron supplements to avoid iron deficiency anemia & 0.8 mg folic acid to avoid neural tube defects💊
3) Avoid fish that may be high in mercury🐳
• Marlin🐋
• Swordfish🐠
• Shark🦈
• Tuna (specifically big eye) canned is fine.🐟
4) Medications to Discontinue 💊
• Lithium, which is used to treat bipolar depression
• ACE inhibitors, such as benazapril, ramipril, & lisinopril which lower blood pressure
• Acne medication isotretinoin, for example Accutane or Retin-A, which is likely to cause birth defects if taken by women who are pregnant
• Some seizure control medications like valproic acid, phenytoin, or carbamazepine
• Paroxetine (Paxil), which is used to treat depression & other conditions
• Anxiety medications like Alprazolam (such as Xanax) or Diazepam (such as Valium)
• Methotrexate which is used to treat arthritis
• Warfarin which helps prevent blood clots
• Some antibiotics including doxycycline & tetracycline
• Anti Thyroid Drugs such as propylthiouracil & methimazole

This is not a complete list of medications to discontinue, only the most common. If you are on a medication speak to your doctor👨‍⚕️ as to whether it is safe to take during your pregnancy.

This is my toilet, which I became closely acquainted with. 🚽🤢🤮
.
At some point between 6 and 7 weeks the nausea began; I wasn’t vomiting at first. Nausea wasn’t quite like a stomach bug; it was most comparable to feeling hungover. I felt it all the time.
.
The other thing was sheer exhaustion. I wasn’t performing adequately at work and so ended up telling my closest colleague (who was picking up pieces) and boss, who were luckily v understanding. And when got home, I would just vegetate on the sofa. Husband and I are pretty evenly split with regards to chores anyway (we both work full time) so that’s never been an issue, and he really stepped up (like doing 95%+ around the house) during early pregnancy💕.
.
I did take the occasional day off work after the vomiting began. I tended to be sick nearly every morning and often last thing at night. This meant generally I could go in in between but sometimes after my morning vomiting I’d be tearful and so tired and unable to focus so I’d just want to stay home. Looking back, could’ve taken more time off, but felt guilt. Even though sometimes I’d feel so shit at work I’d just go cry in the loo! 😢
.
Advice – DON’T feel guilty!!! Even if not actually being sick! Exhaustion and nausea are horrible and you’re growing a human and getting used to a huge emotional change too – just take the time! Though I appreciate not all workplaces are as supportive as mine. I hope the world continues to move in the right direction with regards to this sort of thing…
.
More on morning sickness to follow. To those struggling right now, I’m aware some can end up in hospital on a drip (look up hyperemesis gravidarum), it WILL pass. Possibly not at 12 weeks bang on and for an unlucky few, not for months, but it will eventually. You can do this and don’t be afraid to seek help from dr / midwife if needed. Also educate other half if they’re not getting it. Also don’t listen to anybody who tells you it’s mind over matter or some bullshit like that; you’re NOT failing if you’re struggling with early pregnancy / pregnancy, it’s just a really rough time!
.
Also – polo mints are your friend!!😄
