Never did I think this would be my last picture taken in front of my own mirror. At 29 weeks pregnant I got rushed to the hospital in yorkton after my ultrasound, from there I got admitted to RUH in Saskatoon. This dates back 1 year ago, I couldn’t of imagined how things all played out. 33 days in NICU BUT almost one year later we have 2 healthy little girls 🥰 #nicubaby #identicaltwins #braxtonhicks #pretermlabor #earlypregnancy

Annie is about to have the first-trimester screening done and she really wants to know what’s involved.⁣

👉🏻Follow @babytalk.birthnurse for more fun pregnancy and birth education from a labour and delivery nurse👩‍⚕️ #preggolego⁣ 😍⁣

The first-trimester screening is a combined test that calculates the probability of the fetus having certain chromosomal conditions, specifically Down syndrome and other trisomies.⁣

There are two different components:⁣

1️⃣ A blood test to measure levels of two pregnancy-specific substances in your blood. PAPP-A and hCG.⁣
2️⃣ An ultrasound to measure the clear space in the tissue at the back of your baby’s neck. This is also called nuchal translucency.⁣

These tests are typically done between weeks 11 and 14.⁣

The laboratory uses a statistical calculation using the results of the blood test and ultrasound, in combination with your age to calculate the RISK that your baby will have a chromosomal abnormality. 📈⁣

Note that it is only risk that is calculated. This is not a diagnostic test in any way. If the result comes back as high risk, this only means that your provider will have to do another type of test to know for sure whether this is going on.🧪🌡⁣

Before you decide whether you’d like to have this test or not, it’s important whether to know what you will do with that information. ⁣

In the unlikely event that your baby does have chromosomal abnormalities, you might be faced with the decision to terminate the pregnancy. Is that something you think you would do? ⁣

The first-trimester screening is by no means a must! It’s a personal choice that parents must decide on.🧸⁣

Did you have the first trimester combined screening?⁣

To the ladies who are in the early stages of your pregnancies,

I know you waited months or years for this moment and are dealing with mixed feelings at best.

It’s okay not to know how to feel, or to have those feelings change over time.

Please be gentle with yourself as your coping strategies may change as your feelings do.

And remember, the strength and tenacity you used to get here will be part of the plan for moving forward.

I am sending lots of soothing energy your way! 💗

We had a reassurance scan at 14 weeks 5 days today. (Thankfully all was ok) ❤ .

We have been lucky enough to have had them every 1 – 2 weeks throughout our pregnancy so far (from 6 weeks), and although Mike wasn’t allowed into the hospital with me this time, I wanted to say I am extremely grateful.

Grateful that we were allowed one last reassurance scan. One last face to face meeting with our recurrent miscarriage consultant. One more check of our meds before embarking on the next stage of our pregnancy with less face to face support.

Our consultant said to me today “I am so glad you are on this side of all of this. There are women who have just found out they are pregnant after loss, and will be unable to access reassurance scans due to NHS staff being needed elsewhere in the hospital” .

Our NHS staff are working around the clock, but it is inevitable that they will be called to help fight the Coronavirus pandemic. With resources already stretched, they are just unable to continue to offer reassurance scans for the foreseeable future.

Although this is a completely understandable and necessary step for the NHS to take, the thought that women and their partners are facing the complete unknown in the early stages of their pregnancy is heartbreaking. I struggled to go longer than a week without a recurrent miscarriage scan, and I found they massively helped me manage my anxiety, and allowed me to breathe easy for a little while.

There’s no easy way around this, but there is help out there if you find yourself in this position.

Some amazing resources include:

Speak to their midwives via email or phone call. Search for their Facebook support groups. Call your EPAU if you have ANY concerns. You can get through this. It will be hard being in the dark, but you can do it.

Sending you all a pocket hug ❤ .

Officially 8 weeks as of today🤰

I love the little grape so much already 😭 It’s so early but my body has already started going through some crazy, big changes. Hair grows super fast (and in weird places) nails are growing longer, day time naps are a regular thing and of course the hormones 😂😂
I feel like things are finally settling down (symptom wise) and I am truly able to enjoy this process.

Even with all the changes my heart is so grateful I can’t wait to be a Mama ✨♥️ .
