The early days of pregnancy.
It’s hard to believe whether it’s real. No one can see anything, you can’t be sure if you’re feeling your period coming or early pregnancy twinges.
What was your first sign of pregnancy? Did you doubt if it was really happening?

This image is from @jacquelinesarahh who’s waiting to meet her babe.

IVF is an incredible journey and we all hope and pray we will have success but I for one planned for the worst… as I felt so strongly about being let down every month when I tried to stay hopeful for the past 4 years…
.
IVF was our last hope and we were so lucky it worked! I moved from 1 in 8 to the lucky 1 in 3 who has success in their first IVF cycle…! .
I’ve struggle to accept it is real though which has shocked me… I think after all the wait and stress I can’t believe this miracle has happened to me! This week I am so much stronger and starting to tell people and my bump starting to show has helped.
.
Life surprises us in so many ways and IVF has been our miracle but don’t feel worried if it takes you a while to accept the news – it’s been my new struggle which I am learning to deal with and now start to enjoy! .

This is a 6 week scan of a colleague that I scanned after she had some bleeding. This scan showed a normal pregnancy. She is now 32 weeks pregnant and volunteered this video to @theovarystory. I think ultrasound is amazing and can give answers to some questions if done at the right time in a pregnancy. I think it’s really special to be able to see a live forming that is as small as 6-10mm and feel privileged that I can scan and help people at this time in their life. Say hello to “Trev” everyone. (details about scans in early pregnancies seen in insta post a two days ago). ……………………………………………………………

PART 2 Hyperemesis Gravidarum – Severe Nausea and Vomiting⁣

“To summarise it has taken my independence, my confidence, my dignity, my social life, my ability to go to work, my ability to leave the house without worry and overall it has just taken my personality.”⁣

Hyper- (excessive) ⁣
-emesis (to vomit)⁣
Gravidarum (of pregnancy) ⁣

How does it differ from ‘morning sickness’?⁣
Hyperemesis is characterised by: ⁣
🤮excessive nausea and vomiting⁣
🥵dehydration⁣
🧂electrolyte imbalance ⁣
📊nutritional disturbances⁣
⚖️more than 5% pre-pregnancy weight loss⁣

In addition, babies of mothers with HG are at risk of being SGA (‘small for gestational age’)⁣

👩‍⚕️As mentioned in my previous post, women experience a lack of understanding and knowledge from professionals. ⁣
🤷‍♀️Possibly because it is a rare condition, but also one that is not well understood⁣
📚In my own training, I received very little teaching on HG, though it is a debilitating condition that hugely impacts women’s pregnancies. ⁣

🙏I’m super grateful to Rowan @myhyperemesisglow for sharing her experience and also finding the positives despite the tough times. I’ve learned so much and will hopefully be a better midwife for it!⁣

I tried to fit it all in a caption but I didn’t want to cut down or edit Rowan’s words, so swipe for some insight on what HG is really like.⁣

PART 1 Just a little morning sicknessNEWSFLASH It doesnt just hit in the morning Morn…

PART 1 “Just a little morning sickness”⁣

NEWSFLASH! It doesn’t just hit in the morning 🤪⁣

🤢“Morning sickness”, or more appropriately ‘nausea and vomiting of pregnancy’ (NVP) affects 70-80% of pregnant women.⁣
85% have two episodes of nausea PER DAY⁣
30% of pregnant women in paid employment take time off because of NVP⁣

❓What’s the cause?⁣
NVP generally starts around 4 weeks, peaks between 5-10 weeks and then slowly declines until 20 weeks. ⁣
📈This correlates to levels of hCG hormone (human chorionic gonadotrophin) which is thought to be the cause (with possible influence from oestrogen and progesterone too). However, there is poor understanding of exactly how hCG causes NVP.⁣

The severity of symptoms varies massively, but whether ‘mild’ or ‘severe’, it’s known to negatively impact:⁣
🧠Mental health⁣
🏠Taking care of the household⁣
👯‍♀️Social life⁣
💑Relationship with partner⁣
👩‍👧‍👦Caring for other children⁣
🤓Work capacity ⁣
🤢Sick leave ⁣
😰Considering termination of pregnancy⁣
😣Considering not getting pregnant again ⁣

👶The reassuring news is that NVP has no significant adverse effect on baby, and some research shows that pregnancies complicated by NVP are less likely to result in miscarriage.⁣

😔HOWEVER, it has a significant impact on women’s quality of life, and it’s well-reported that healthcare staff brush off the severity of symptoms as a normal part of pregnancy.⁣

What can you do to ease symptoms? Inevitably there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution, but these are the most important points:⁣
🥴Make the most of nausea-free periods to eat and drink.⁣
🍴Eat little and often. ⁣
🥤Keep hydrated as much as possible.⁣
😷Avoid strong odours.⁣
😴Rest. Lots. ⁣
🤮Anti-sickness medication as prescribed.⁣
🧡Ginger may be helpful.⁣
📌Acustimulations (acupressure and acupuncture) may improve NVP and is safe in pregnancy ⁣

This picture was.much cuter in real life. I’ve come off nights this morning so I’m really tired. Toby has sat with phoebe and entertained her and generally just helped me out.

My children are not normally like this as those who know us will know so it’s been a lovely morning so far. I need to make the most of it because it won’t last!!
