What is a chemical pregnancy?⁣ 🧬🧬

If you read @hilariabaldwin ‘s article on her miscarriages, you have seen that she had a few “chemical pregnancies”. A chemical pregnancy is a miscarriage that happens within the first five weeks of a pregnancy, where you get your period about a week later than expected. Sometimes it happens after a positive pregnancy test, sometimes you might not even know you were pregnant. It is too early for the fetus to be seen on ultrasound. ⁣
⁣
Chemical pregnancies (or very early pregnancy loss) are very common; they can account for up to 75 percent of all miscarriages. For some reason the embryo never fully implants in the uterus that results in bleeding around a week after your regular period was due. So if you have heavy bleeding (with or without cramping) after a positive pregnancy test, call your doctor right away, as you may be experiencing a chemical pregnancy.⁣

If you have light spotting or bleeding following a positive pregnancy test, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re having a chemical pregnancy (light implantation bleeding can mean you are pregnant). On the other hand, heavy bleeding, menstrual-like cramps and passing tissue from the vagina are signs of a chemical pregnancy.⁣

Although a chemical pregnancy might sound unfair and cause great sadness, doctors actually look at a single chemical pregnancy as a positive sign that you can get pregnant. Physically, you are ready to try again right away. Emotionally, it is your call.⁣
