Toxoplasmosis is an infection that can cause a mild headache, sweats, fever, in some cases, a rash, and most of the time, causes swollen lymph nodes. For many adults who catch it though, they don't experience any symptoms. And you wanted to know, specifically, why pregnant women aren't screened for toxoplasmosis, especially because many adults don't have symptoms, and that's a good question. It basically comes down to the fact that the chance of being infected with it is so low, especially in North America, there really isn't a great treatment for it, and screening for it is very expensive. And when it comes to pregnancy, screening is something that can tell you if it's suspected, but an actual diagnosis can only be obtained by getting a sample amniotic fluid from the woman's abdomen and testing it. And this procedure can put the pregnancy at risk, so the decision to perform this test needs to be weighed out with the help of a maternal fetal medicine specialist who knows the woman's circumstances and can determine if the information gained from that is worth the potential risk. For all of these reasons, the focus is not on screening, but on prevention. And toxoplasmosis can be spread by contaminated water sources, raw or under-cooked food, contaminated fruits and vegetables, and also a cat's litter box. So if you're trying to conceive or pregnant, then turn cat litter duty over to someone else, make sure you're rinsing fruits and vegetables really well, that you're cleaning cutting boards, knives, and counters really well after preparing raw meant, and cooking meat to at least 152 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure you wash your hands well before and after food preparation, and if the water sources you have access to are questionable, then drink bottled water instead. If you have more specific questions or concerns about it, talk with your OB provider who can give you tailored information and advice, and if you have more questions in the future for me, feel free to ask them on our Intermountain Moms Facebook and Instagram pages, and recommend us to your friends and family too.
